For most of 2011, global equity markets reacted to macro-economic and geo-political concerns. The European debt crisis appeared to put the global economic recovery at risk. In addition, several emerging market economies showed signs of overheating, and this prompted quite a few emerging market central banks to increase short-term interest rates...however, feelings of doom and gloom had become overly pervasive by the end of 2011.
