What’s in the news:
Startling statistics from the March edition of the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s survey:
- 50% of American workers reported to have less than $25,000 saved for retirement
- 18% of American workers feel very confident about retiring, and six out of ten American workers feel very or somewhat confident about having enough money to retire comfortably
- Amongst the already retired, 79% were very or somewhat confident about having enough money to live comfortably in their retired years
So if American workers are aware of their need to save more, how come they are not doing so?
According to a report from Wells Fargo, American workers “have an investment strategy that's too conservative" and 59% of Americans are more concerned about avoiding loss than maximizing the growth of their retirement investments.
What are we thinking?
Volatility in the capital markets can be a cause for concern, but the stress should not be at the expense of preparing for a comfortable retirement. Making informed decisions on what retirement savings route is best for you or your clients should be addressed sooner rather than later to help reduce the impact of market dips in the long-term.
At Roosevelt we believe our Current Income Portfolio is an investment strategy suitable for most savers, not just retirees or those soon approaching retirement but also for younger investors who can take advantage of the compounding interest gained, which when reinvested could get more dramatic as time goes by.
