Thoughts from our Domestic Equity Team
At Roosevelt Investments, our equity investment process is guided by a thematic framework. One of our foundational beliefs is that thematic drivers may act as a catalyst for a company’s stock to outperform its peers, thus providing a benefit for our clients. The themes we identify generally represent large-scale, transformational changes that we believe will occur in the coming three, five, or even ten year time horizon. We believe that demographic shifts can fit this description and be powerful drivers of change. In addition, we view such shifts as having the added benefit of being relatively immune to macroeconomic forces.
A new theme we are tracking is one we call “Demographic Dividends,” and is based on a significant demographic wave currently sweeping over the United States. After World War II, veterans returned home and over the next decade married and had children. Those children formed an outsized demographic cohort which became the familiar “Baby Boom” generation, and that generation is now retiring from the workforce in large numbers. In the coming years, we think it is likely that this demographic wave will generate a great deal of economic activity for certain parts of the economy, benefitting the fortunate companies who are situated to respond to the needs and demands of baby boomers as they enter their senior years. We are currently analyzing a number of companies that we believe could be beneficiaries of this demographic wave.
